I have a few questions, you can answer them if you
like.
First, I am not sure on the guns.. are you replacing ALL the guns?
Yes. All the weapons will be replaced with weapons from or inspired by
the movie.
Were there 11 weapons in the movie?
That's why I added the "inspired". No there were very few variety of
weapons in the film.
And where did
you get the art...for the guns?
The ART. The graphics for the guns is being created by photographing
rented props of the weapons in question and digitizing the footage for
importing into Duke.
Renting?
Does this TC have a budget then?
Yes, I have been investing a lot of my own personal finances into this
just because it's a rewarding hobby type thing. The weapons are fairly
cheap to rent since I know the guy who I rent them from. The cost is
about $40/day.
Is this your
first TC?
Yes.
It says on your
page that the actors will be filmed on bluescreen. Do you have a
specific cast of actors?
The people playing the parts are doing it for free. They are a
collection of people I know, friends, and aquaintances.
Could you
describe the music. It says that you won't have midi.
On the midi area, usually most TC's have some sort of background
midi. And I understand the sound at 'key points', but how much music
are you going to have throughout the TC?
The TC will be a fairly large download due to the amount of WAV music
stored in the GRP
I am of the opinion that midi just plain sucks and I think we can pull
off the WAV music nicely without slowing the game down. As for
frequency of music, it won't be constant. There will be periods of
silence but that will likely just enhance the mood I think.
Yes,
definitely setting the mood is important. Do you have an estimation
on file size?
Too early to say, but I'm estimating there will be 23 new ART files.
That may give you an idea.
What made you
choose DIE HARD.. is it your favorite movie?
Yes. DIE HARD is my favorite movie. I figured if I wanted to get a TC
of good quality made and maintain interest in it, it should be of my
favorite movie. At least no one else has made a DIE HARD-TC yet.
Where did you
get the sounds for Duke Talk? I know obviously the movie, but HOW did
you get the sounds?
Software/Hardware?
Well, if it involves both.
I'm lucky enough
to work at a place where I get full access to a lot of expensive
equipment. We have a sound designer here who volunteered to help with
the sounds for the TC. I gave him a copy of the movie and told him to
start sampling everything he could that he thought could be used in
the game. He gives me a list of what he has, and when I need a sound I
just get it off of him. The sounds are mostly from DIE HARD but some
Duke Talk may have to be borrowed from DIE HARD 2 and 3.
Are you
replacing any of the remote ridicule? for multiplayers?
Yes, we will have a couple of different RTS that are designed for
Deathmatch, Team play, and Co-op.
What programs
specifically were used to get the images from DIE HARD? Like on your
example page of the circuit box?
We capture material from the movie on an AVID video editing station
(Mac) and process the images in Premiere and Photoshop.
Photoshop, and Debabelizer.
Those for the circuit box.
Premiere is mainly used for the cutscenes.
Do you have a
due date yet?
Not yet, but things are speeding up now. I really worry about progress
speed because others are waiting on me for graphics plus Duke's
lifespan is already overdue I think.
I'm already looking forward to doing a Duke 4 TC. :-)
Are you
planning any add-ons or any upgrades, etc.?
We are planning a port if possible to Duke 1.3, but we'll have to see.
We may have some add-on levels later too. Again, we'll have to see.
I'd rather just think about getting the main thing done for now.
How are you
going to program his wife in? Is she going to be just in animations,
or is she a sprite?
She will be a sprite.
What about
your team - do they like DIE HARD as much as you?
That's an impossibility. :-) Yes, most of them like DIE HARD. I think
one of them isn't a big fan, but he was into working on the TC and his
MAP submittal was great.
Was it hard
to find the perfect team (is it perfect?) and did you go through a lot
of people before finding really good ones?
The MAPpers are plentiful out there, but it's hard finding some that
demonstrate the skill you may be looking for. The hardest person to
find would probably be the CON hacker. I haven't seen a current TC yet
that isn't looking for one. I haven't talked to ours lately and there
are one or 2 people who have written in requesting a shot at the
position, so if our current CON hacker doesn't work out we'll at least
have someone else to turn to.
I think our team is pretty good right now though. They're patient,
thank god.
Do you do any
CON hacking?
Me? No. If worse came to worse though, I'd give it a shot. Let's hope
it doesn't come to that. :-)
How much of
the CON files will be edited?
Hmm.. I can't say for sure. That's not my area.
There will be quite a few changes though.
Well, this
seems to be a MAJOR production. You have spent a lot of money it
seems. Have you ever thought of making your own game?
Yes, I have thought of it. I even discussed with some friends whether
we wanted to start our own game company a while back with a Quake 2
licensed product as our first game.
We abandoned the idea though, unfortunately.
There were a lot of legal aspects and plus id wanted 500k + 12.5%
Do you plan
on making any more TC's, maybe DIE HARD 2, 3?
I'd like to say definitely, but who knows? I really like the stuff I
saw in the Duke 4 trailer from E3. It just begs for a TC. I can't
imagine starting another project for at least a few months after DTCs
completion. I need a break already. (It's hard doing all this and
having a day job)
Ok, do you
have anything you would like the 'public' to know about the TC? Maybe
some sneak previews of what is to come?
I'd like to keep as much of it a surprise as possible, but one thing I
would like to say is to stress to anyone that may have doubts, that
this TC will come out and not be dropped. I just hope people will
still play it when it comes out even if there are better games out by
then.
Well, I'm
sure Duke will be played for a long time, so you don't need to worry.
Also with the upcoming DukeBall CTF TC (add-on really) there will be a
lot more going on with Duke.
I heard about that, but I haven't had time to check it out yet. I'll
take a look at that after we're done.
Are you going
to have the roof scene in the movie?
Of course!
Cool!
That's the climax of the film, there wouldn't be a point in the TC
without that part.
And I have to
ask (my fav scene and fav quote, too) what about the RV?
There will be police cars and a RV in the streets below. The only
thing that may be problematic is the RV crashing up the stairs, but
I'm sure the MAPpers will think of something.
Have you
thought of making it a 2-way transport (like the subway)?
Yes, but the CON factor prevented it.
Maybe for deathmatch, but in the game the RV would be a one way path
to... "toast".
Did you
consider the SW engine? It could have cars, in the parking lot...
I would have loved to have had the ladders and 3D sprites.
Also, I
noticed the guns are on the left. Have you considered making a
separate d/l with right hand weapons for those of us who are right
handed?
Nope, sorry. Willis is left handed so that's why the weapons are too.
I'm sure if it bugs enough people someone else or maybe myself will
come up with replacement Art for right handers.
Have you
considered it as an 'art specific' add-on?
Definitely.
I'd like to thank the MAPpers for being so patient with me while
waiting for the ART files. :-)
