What made you decide to do Russian Overkill?
We had different themes like Gulf War, Inka theme, and a theme about Russia, the old conflict about USA and Russia. And that's why we chose the theme Russia. And before I worked on several projects but never released them. And I just thought let's start a big good TC project!

Did you do a lot of research on weapons to get the right ones?
Well, we decided to use as many Russian weapons as possible, but most are really crap and don't look really nice. Also the Uzi is used very often already in many TC's. That's why we only have one real Russian Weapon, the AK47. And no, I didn't search long for them. I have a friend whose hobby is weapons, and he has a big catalog with many weapons and their descriptions!

What other TC's have you done? And how have they helped you with making this one?
I only have done a small PC called Invasion (Dec '97), which will be released in the coming weeks! And another thing I made is the Navy Seals Weapon Patch For Duke. All those things I made my own. The Invasion PC will be modified by Eric Cartman. I am working at several TC groups, too. About the members of the Russian Overkill TC... I searched really long to get good members and I am also still searching for more members.

What about your team? Was it hard to find people who are good at what they do?
Yes, really. It was easy to find mappers but getting good artist and MIDI composers was really hard!

How much stuff are you replacing and adding? Do you feel when it's done it will be a large file? And do you have an estimate on how large?
This is the biggest problem we have. We will replace almost everything (even the voices). We decided to make 3 episodes (about 20 single player maps) plus some DeathMatch maps (about 10), and DukeTag maps (about 5).  We will have 10/11 new weapons and new arts, SFX, MIDI's... we haven't made any decisions about the enemies (how many we will replace). I think the file will be about 10-20 megs! I hope that we get the permission from 3DRealms to put the TC on a CD-ROM. You would only have to pay the shipping cost and CD-ROM cost, but I think they will say no.

Describe the music you are going to have.   And did you replace much sound? Any RT's replacements?
The music will be based on MIDI and will have an agent theme, and of course, it should fit with the maps! Maybe we will also have maps based on VOC's.

Why the Build engine? Did you have to decide over another or was it a quick decision?
It was a quick decision. Duke was the first action shooter on my hard disk and Build was the first map editor I had!

How much of the .CON files were edited?
We had 2 modes: a paintball mode for DeathMatch and a normal mode. The .CON hacks for the paintball mode are finished, but the other .CON's are about 20% completed.

What are the levels based on? Like what type of scenes?
I think that's the plus of the TC! We have levels where you are at the Kremlin, St. Petersburg, Submarine,.... and many other places. Especially the first level will maybe blow you away!

Are you pleased with the progress so far? Do you think this TC will make a big impact?
The current progress is only about 30%, but that will be changed rapidly after 3 weeks! And I hope that the TC will make a big impact because we really try to make the levels as good as we can. And another plus could be some of the new effects we have.

What programs are being used to make the art? Do you think the art will be really realistic?
Well, of course we also import some arts of other games, but textures are made with Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro, then we also use a scanner to scan textures, and weapons are made with Simply 3D and 3D Studio Max and the enemies will be made with Simply 3D and other modeler programs! About the realistic, I hope that they will all look good because that's a problem, that we can only use 256 colors, but the current textures look good I would say.

Do you plan on making any more TC's? If yes, will you use the same team?
Yup. But I don't want to say much about it. It's still secret. I haven't ask all of the current members yet, but I hope that most will also work on the next project!

On your website you don't have a story.   Have you thought of a good one?
We want to make a good story. The headline is that Duke is flying to Russia and has to meet a friend (Agent) in St. Petersburg. But this guy was killed by the Mafia (or another terrorist group) and now Duke is marching all over Russia to kill the murderer, and finally he kills the guy (1-2 episode). The 3rd episode is about the return of Communism.  The progress is 30%, but the maps of the 1-2 episode are all in progress, and almost all DeathMatch and DukeTag levels! And the other thing I want to tell is we will release a demo TC(1 single co-op map about Moscow and Kremlin, 1 DeathMatch map and one DukeTag map based on CTF and more). This demo TC will be out in 2-5 weeks!
