Defence Alliance
Overview
In Defence alliance ( DA
for short ) You and your teammates are to defend a fort against a series
of attackers ( Bots ). You have a certain amount of time in which to
carefully choose your player and position yourself where you want to be.
Once this time is over the attack begins and The attackers will start to
attempt to take over your base. You simply have to prevent this from
happening and keep your base attack free for about 20 mins. Teamplay is
most certainly the key element and you must conserve your ammo as attacks
can last a long time with little ammo to hold off those enemies. There are
6 classes from which include A mechanic, a medic, a sniper and a marine
class which is split into 3 sub classes. These sub classes are: Infantry,
Machine gunner and grenadier.
The MOD is based in the
fairly near future so there aren't any Heat rays and cloaking devices,
more like hard powered grenade launchers and super zoom snipers.
Play test

As soon as you load up DA
you can see how much work the DA team has put into DA. the custom
introduction ( which replaces the unreal tournament's city scrolling
map ) is very well designed and animated. The system is very much like
unreal in that you take damage from hits and die if all your health is
gone. Unfortunately it only currently has one mode of play but that will
soon change as DA development progresses. It is only in Beta mode so bugs
are possible though the only real problem I noticed is some texture
clipping with some of the weapons.
Instead of picking up
weapons and ammunition you start with a set amount and a mechanic can help
refill your machine gunning needs. For example if you choose to be a
sniper you are given a handgun, a knife and of course a sniper rifle. You
can get more ammo from pre place boxes (which ill go into a bit further
on).
There are a fair few maps
that are VERY big and give lots of room for a good old fashioned shoot
out. The maps detail is fairly good and in parts excellent but there is
always room for improvement on any game.
As I mentioned before, you
cant just watch as ammo re-spawns everywhere, you are given a set amount
to start with. When you create a game you have an option to change your
setting up time when you place ammo boxes and get into position. This is
defaulted on 3 minutes which is more than enough to get ready for an
impending attack. This time is when you can place an ammo box which has
backup ammo for your character so should you run out, there is usually
enough to keep them attackers away from your back.
The choice of characters
is more a choice of class. each classes characters are the same so they
can be told apart from one another in the battle field. By this I mean all
the snipers are the same character, all the medics look the same etc...
The music is pretty much
unreal's music but the sound effects are very well set. The sniper rifle
actually sounds like a sniper rifle should do and grenade launcher doesn't
explode everything in sight.
DA has many features they
hope to implement in the future such as, drivable vehicles, much more game
modes and maps, more characters and of course more weapons. The team are
releasing the beta 1.2 in the near future and hopefully the next release
will be a big one we can all look forward too.
